When I discovered the possibilities of crochet, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some twine. Once I did, it was baskets galore. I have several baskets waiting in the wings, but this pattern is one of my particular favourites. Not only is extremely practical (I tend to hoard projects, so a functional project is a good project), it’s also customizable. From mixing twine and yarn to mixing different stitches, coasters are a perfect way to experiment for a beginner like me.
I find myself using this coaster much more than I thought I would. Initially it was just a test to see if I could do it, but I actually love it!
Once you get used to working with twine—it can be quite bulky and stiff—this coaster comes together quite quickly. I had to limit myself to one with the hoarding problem and all. I bet that a set of homemade coasters could make a great gift for the right person. The twine look isn’t to everyone’s taste, but I like it just fine—I hope you do too!
Twine Coaster
In The Round
Materials:
- Medium-weight twine
- Fine or worsted weight yarn
- Size 5.00MM Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
Crochet Stitches Used:
- Single crochet
Pattern:
Chain 4 stitches, working with both the twine and the yarn, and join in the round
Single crochet 8 times into the centre to create first round
Work in a spiral: *single crochet once into the first space, single crochet twice into the second space to increase
Repeat from * until you reach your desired circumference
Weave in ends using a tapestry needle
*Tip: Working in a spiral can spiral out of hand (see what I did there?). Mark your starting stitch in the round to keep track of your increasing. I slipped a bobby pin in the stitch while I was working around and it worked perfectly.
Happy crocheting!
